Meters FAQ

What do I do if I park at a meter and it is broken?

If you park at a university meter and pay the meter with coins or use your CashKey and the meter is malfunctioning, call the Parking office at 217-333-3530 to provide the meter number, location and description of the malfunction. Any vehicle that remains parked at a malfunctioning meter is subject to citation, unless the meter is paid by phone app, Day Meter Permit, or Departmental Meter Permit.

Do all parking meters on campus belong to the University of Illinois?

The University Parking District is comprised of the University of Illinois, City of Champaign, and City of Urbana. Meters, signage, regulations and enforcement differ between entities. See different labels on meters. See pictures of U of I, Urbana, and Champaign logos on the Parking page.

What is going on with the CashKey service?

As of July 1, 2018 CashKeys will no longer be serviced or supported by the Parking Department and the Cities of Urbana and Champaign. The University of Illinois Parking Department stopped selling new CashKeys in 2014 when the hardware became less reliable and the vendor started phasing out support for this outdated service. Because the vendor has now completely stopped supporting the equipment, as of December 31, 2018, CashKeys will no longer be accepted as payment at campus meters.

What happens if I have a balance remaining on my CashKey?

Because CashKeys will no longer be a valid form of meter payment after December 31,2018, we advise being judicious with the amount of time added to these keys prior to June 30, 2018. You should also plan accordingly to use all pre-purchased CashKey time before December 31, 2018.

What can I do with my old CashKey?

CashKeys are not eligible for buyback. You should plan accordingly to use all CashKey time before December 31, 2018.

Can I use a CashKey in combination with coins?

While CashKeys are still in use, they can be used in combination with American quarters, dimes and nickels.
